Cody's Challenge is more than just a racing event; it's a joyous celebration of community, adventure, sport, and philanthropy. Taking place annually at the esteemed Steamboat Ski Resort, Cody’s Challenge is a randonee race that invites participants to scale up and down the picturesque slopes. Whether you're a seasoned racer or a first-timer, this event caters to all, with two different courses designed to accommodate varying skill levels – long and short.

Cody’s Challenge is an alpine touring race that invites participants to scale up and down the picturesque slopes. Whether you're a seasoned racer or a first-timer, this event caters to all, with two different courses designed to accommodate varying skill levels – long and short.

The exciting aspect of the event is its charitable nature. All proceeds from the race go to the Cody St. John Foundation. This foundation was established to honor Cody St. John, a professional ski patrol at Steamboat and a nurse, whose life was marked by a tragic auto accident. Today, this Foundation provides scholarships to Professional Ski Patrollers for continuing medical education, ensuring Cody's dedication to help others lives on.

Participants in Cody's Challenge can select between the long and short course based on their confidence and experience. If you're a seasoned racer or ready to take your ski mountaineering experience to the next level, the long course provides a thrilling challenge. However, if this is your first SkiMo race, or you're still a novice in the sport, the short course might suit you better. There are Men's and Women's divisions in both the long and short course, as well as a junior division on the short course, ensuring opportunities for racer of all ages and experience levels.

Despite the exhilaration of the race, the fun doesn't stop there. The registration fee includes a swag bag filled with partner-branded merchandise to remember your involvement in the event. Once the racing is over, participants and spectators are welcomed to the post-race party for lunch and a beverage, where they can mingle, share their race experiences, and further delight in the spirit of community and competition that defines the event.

Cardboard Classic (April during Springalicious)

Cardboard Classic

Steamboat Springs isn't just a haven for skiers and snowboarders but also a vibrant community that celebrates the quirky and creative side of mountain life. One such celebration is the Cardboard Classic, a beloved annual event that captures the inventive spirit of Steamboat residents and visitors alike.

The Cardboard Classic is Steamboat Springs' traditional rite of spring. This event isn't your typical race; it's a wild and hilarious descent down Stampede at the Steamboat Ski Area that features an array of homemade cardboard crafts, each one more ingenious than the last. These crafts aren't made from your usual racing materials; they're constructed solely from cardboard, glue, string, water-based paint, duct tape, masking tape, packing tape, balloons, and other decorations. It's a testament to the creativity and humor of the participants, and the results are always spectacularly amusing.

Tips for Building Your Craft

For those looking to build a craft that not only stands out but also has a chance of making it down the hill successfully, consider these tips:

    • Weight equates to speed. A well-distributed weight can help the craft slide smoothly.

    • Choosing the right type of cardboard is crucial. Cardboard with a plastic coating tends to slide better and resists soggy disintegration.

    • Sled-shaped crafts that are long and narrow usually pick up the most speed.

    • Duct tape on the bottom of the craft can reduce friction with the snow, making for a swifter journey downhill.

    • Pay attention to weight distribution. Rear-weighted crafts may end up going downhill backward, which, while hilarious, might not be the fastest approach.

    • Rudders can increase speed by reducing surface friction with the snow.

Contestants will take their crafts to the slopes for a day of laughter and camaraderie. The race is a fan favorite, drawing a crowd eager to see which cardboard creations will survive the course, and which will tumble hilariously through the snow. The craft designs range from simple sleds to elaborate replicas of vehicles, animals, and famous buildings.

The magic of the Cardboard Classic lies not just in the race itself but in the weeks of preparation, the gathering of friends and family to construct these wacky crafts, and the inevitable stories that emerge from both triumphant finishes and spectacular wipeouts. It's a celebration that brings everyone together, wrapped up in the joy of creativity and the anticipation of spring's arrival in Steamboat Springs.

Whether you're there to compete or just to watch and laugh along with the community, the Cardboard Classic is an essential part of the spring season in Steamboat Springs, and a reminder of the playful heart that beats strong in this mountain town.

Splashdown Pond Skim (April during Springalicious)

The Splashdown Pond Skim is an eagerly awaited annual tradition that invites participants to skim across a man-made pond at the base of the mountain. This thrilling event is typically held in April, amidst sunny days and the excellent remaining snow of the season, offering an unforgettable spectacle of skimming and, for many, humorous splashing.

Competitors launch themselves down a slope and attempt to skim across a chilly pond, with their success based not only on their ability to make it to the other side but also on factors such as costume creativity, distance covered, style, and air. Perhaps most importantly, the crowd's response can turn an impressive skim or a comical splash into the day's winning performance.

This exuberant event is a highlight of the Springalicious festivities at Steamboat Resort, marking a joyous conclusion to the ski season with a splash – quite literally.
