The Best Places to See Fall Colors in and Around Steamboat Springs in 2026

Golden aspens, mountain passes, historic barns, scenic byways, and vibrant hiking trails make fall one of the most beautiful times to visit Steamboat Springs. Here's where to catch the best colors in 2026.

Many people picture Steamboat Springs covered in snow and think of it primarily as one of Colorado's premier destinations for world-class skiing. But let me tell you something about fall here that flies under the radar for many travelers.

For a few short weeks between mid-September and early October, the Yampa Valley transforms into a sea of gold. Entire mountainsides shimmer with glowing aspens. Scenic drives seem purpose-built for road trips. Hiking trails wind through forests painted in every shade of yellow, orange, and crimson. Add crisp mountain air, comfortable temperatures, and fewer crowds, and you have one of Colorado's most magical times of year.

Planning a Steamboat fall trip this year? In this blog post, I'll share the nine best places to see fall foliage in and around Steamboat Springs in 2026, so you won't miss a moment of the town's most colorful season.

TLDR

  • Drive Buffalo Pass for Steamboat's most famous aspen groves.
  • Take Rabbit Ears Pass for classic Colorado mountain scenery.
  • Follow Elk River Road into the quieter side of Routt County.
  • Visit the Flat Tops Scenic Byway for a hidden gem road trip.
  • Hike to Fish Creek Falls surrounded by fall foliage.
  • Walk through one of the region's largest aspen colonies on Flash of Gold.
  • Catch golden hour on Emerald Mountain.
  • Visit the iconic Mad Creek Barn.
  • Enjoy easy leaf-peeping along the Yampa River Core Trail.
  • Ride the gondola, soak in hot springs, or paddle a mountain lake for a different perspective on the season.

1. Buffalo Pass

If Steamboat Springs had a crown jewel for fall foliage, Buffalo Pass would probably wear it. Located only minutes from downtown, this spectacular mountain road climbs toward Summit Lake and the Continental Divide through some of the largest aspen groves in Routt County. Entire hillsides turn brilliant shades of gold, creating the fall scenery people travel across the country to see.

One of the highlights is Rainbow Ridge, where the views open toward Rocky Peak and Crystal Peak framed by glowing aspens. The road reaches over 11,000 feet, which means it is often one of the first places around Steamboat to show color. If you're an early riser, visit during the first hours of the morning for a better chance of spotting elk and moose wandering through the meadows between the forests.

Hot tip: The upper sections of Buffalo Pass can be rough and bumpy. A high-clearance vehicle is highly recommended if you're planning to drive all the way to the top. Cell service is also limited, so download maps before leaving town.

2. Rabbit Ears Pass

Few drives capture Colorado's autumn magic quite like Rabbit Ears Pass.

Heading east on Highway 40, you'll quickly find yourself surrounded by dense aspen groves glowing against dark evergreen forests. The contrast between the bright yellow leaves and deep green pines is spectacular, especially when the afternoon sun lights up the hillsides.

The road is paved, the scenery is very accessible, and there are plenty of pull-offs along the way. Be sure to stop at Dumont Lake and Muddy Pass Lake. On calm days, the reflections of the surrounding foliage in the water are absolutely stunning.

Local tip: This route is particularly beautiful during the last two weeks of September, when many of the aspens reach peak color.

3. Elk River Road

For a more local experience, head north along Elk River Road. The route winds through ranchlands, forests, river valleys, and charming mountain communities that many visitors never take the time to explore.

The scenery here is different from Buffalo Pass or Rabbit Ears. Instead of endless aspen-covered mountainsides, you'll see a rich mix of cottonwoods, willows, river-bottom vegetation, and high-country forests. The result is a more diverse autumnal palette stretching across the landscape.

Continue through Clark, and you'll eventually reach Steamboat Lake and Pearl Lake, both surrounded by beautiful autumn scenery. If you have extra time, turn onto Seedhouse Road and follow the Elk River deeper into the valley. The combination of flowing water, colorful trees, and mountain backdrops makes this one of the most underrated fall drives in the region.

4. Flat Tops Scenic Byway

Want to escape the crowds completely? The Flat Tops Scenic Byway is one of Colorado's best-kept fall secrets. The entire route can take five to seven hours if driven in full, making it an excellent day trip for travelers looking to immerse themselves in classic Colorado autumn scenery.

This scenic route crosses Dunckley Pass and Ripple Creek Pass through vast stretches of golden aspens that seem to go on forever. Unlike some of the more famous foliage destinations in Colorado, you can often drive for long stretches without seeing many other visitors.

One of the highlights is Yamcolo Reservoir, where the surrounding foliage often peaks up to two weeks earlier than other areas around Steamboat.

5. Fish Creek Falls

Located just a few minutes from downtown Steamboat, this iconic waterfall is even more impressive when framed by vibrant autumn foliage. A short paved trail leads directly to the falls, allowing all visitors to enjoy one of Steamboat's most beautiful autumn scenes within minutes.

Those looking for more adventure can continue onto the Uranium Mine Trail. The moderate hike climbs above the waterfall and offers sweeping views of colorful forests stretching across the surrounding mountains.

6. Flash of Gold

The name says everything you need to know. Flash of Gold is one of the area's most famous fall hikes, and once you step onto the trail, you'll immediately understand why. The route crosses fern-filled forests and one of Routt County's largest aspen colonies. During peak season, the trail lives up to its name in spectacular fashion.

If you're looking for the ultimate "Colorado gold" experience, this is it. Just be aware that, at eleven miles round-trip, this is a more ambitious outing than Fish Creek Falls.

7. Emerald Mountain

You don't have to leave town to find incredible fall colors. Emerald Mountain rises directly above Steamboat Springs and offers some of the best views in the entire valley. The trails here are lined with aspens that seem to glow in the afternoon sun.

What makes Emerald Mountain even more special is the perspective. Instead of looking from within the forest, you're looking across the entire Yampa Valley as waves of autumn shades spread across the landscape below.

Make sure to visit during golden hour. As the sun begins to set, the aspens light up, and the town below takes on a warm autumn glow. It's truly one of the most photogenic spots in Steamboat Springs.

8. Mad Creek Trail

You know what makes a great combination? Colorado's fall scenery and Old West history. For that, there's no better place near town than Mad Creek Trail.

The trail leads to the famous Mad Creek Barn, a historic structure dating back to 1906. Along the way, you'll walk through meadows and aspen groves before reaching the barn, which looks especially picturesque surrounded by golden leaves.

9. Yampa River Core Trail

The Yampa River Core Trail runs for 7.5 miles through the heart of Steamboat Springs. Here, you'll see cottonwoods and willows lining the riverbanks, turning warm shades of yellow, orange, and gold as autumn progresses. The path is paved and accessible, making it ideal for walking, biking, or simply enjoying a leisurely afternoon outdoors.

You can also visit the nearby Yampa River Botanic Park, which showcases even more seasonal color, with dozens of gardens displaying warm and vibrant fall shades.

It's Not Just About the Aspens

Aspens may be the stars of the show, but they aren't the only trees putting on a performance in and around Steamboat.

Throughout the region, you'll also find Gambel oak, mountain ash, thimbleberry, cottonwoods, willows, and ferns contributing shades of orange, red, crimson, and bronze. Together, they create a richer and more varied landscape than you may expect.

One fun fact: What appears to be an entire grove of separate aspens is often a single organism connected by one root system. Some aspen colonies are among the largest living organisms on Earth. Nature is pretty impressive, isn't it?

A Few Different Ways to Enjoy the Steamboat Fall Extravaganza

For a bird's-eye view, ride the Steamboat Gondola and watch the valley unfold beneath you. Looking for something more relaxing? Head to Strawberry Park Hot Springs or Old Town Hot Springs and soak while surrounded by autumn scenery.

Pearl Lake is another fantastic option. Kayaking across calm water while vibrant aspens reflect on the surface is hard to beat. Horseback riding through the Mount Zirkel Wilderness is equally amazing and offers a classic Colorado experience.

When Should You Visit?

If you're planning a trip specifically for the foliage, timing is everything!

Higher elevations such as Buffalo Pass and Rabbit Ears Pass typically start changing around mid-September. Much of the region reaches its peak during the third and fourth weekends of September. Lower elevations, including downtown Steamboat and the Yampa River corridor, often look their best in early October.

For the brightest colors, hope for a wet growing season followed by sunny autumn days and cool nights. That's the recipe that creates those legendary Colorado gold displays.
