1. Fish Creek Falls
Fish Creek Falls isn't sitting at the top of this list by accident. If I had to rank the best places to take pictures in Steamboat Springs, Fish Creek Falls would probably claim the number-one spot, or at the very least earn a place in the top three of any Steamboat photo bucket list.
The 280-foot waterfall is one of the region's most recognizable landmarks, and it gets even more beautiful with the arrival of fall, when golden aspens frame the cascading water. Winter is also very photogenic, as the waterfall transforms into dramatic ice formations that look almost unreal.
The lower viewing platform is easily accessible and provides plenty of opportunities for portraits without requiring a long hike.

2. Buffalo Pass
Beginning only minutes from downtown, Buffalo Pass is another spot you should put near the top of your list, especially if you're visiting during autumn, when you can experience the famous "aspen tunnel" creating a glowing canopy of gold overhead.
Late afternoon is ideal, as sunlight filters through the leaves and creates soft beams of golden light. Along the pass, you'll also find scenic trails and lakes that provide even more incredible photo opportunities.

3. Rabbit Ears Pass
Rabbit Ears Pass looks exactly how many travelers imagine Colorado before they arrive.
The iconic rock formations create an instantly recognizable backdrop, and the surrounding hills explode with colour during autumn. The open landscape gives visitors a real sense of scale, making it ideal for wide-angle vacation shots and epic family photos.
If you're visiting during fall foliage season, this is one of the area's classic postcard views.

4. Steamboat Lake and Hahn's Peak
The mountain views here are almost unfair to every other photo spot in town.
The pointed summit of Hahn's Peak rises above the lake and often reflects in the water on calm mornings. The surrounding aspens, cottonwoods, and forests make the scenery even more impressive.
Walk along the shoreline, where you can relax, admire the views, and experiment with different angles to capture the natural beauty unfolding before your eyes.

5. Emerald Mountain
What about adding some breathtaking panoramic views to your camera roll? For that, head to Emerald Mountain.
From its various viewpoints, you'll capture Steamboat Springs below, Mount Werner in the distance, and the entire Yampa Valley stretching toward the horizon. Catching the sunset from above is highly recommended, as the evening light washes the valley in warm tones.
How to get there: To reach some of Emerald Mountain's most iconic viewpoints, head to the top of Blackmer Drive and start from the Quarry Trailhead. From there, follow the Blackmer Trail up the mountain toward Howelsen Hill to reach the quarry, which is widely considered one of the must-see viewpoints in Steamboat Springs.

6. Mad Creek Barn
Steamboat's historic barns are quite underrated when it comes to photo spots, but once you stand beside them, you'll understand how well they capture the spirit of the town.
Mad Creek Barn, for example, is the standout. The weathered wood structure sits against mountain scenery and open meadows, creating a timeless, rustic Colorado backdrop. Couples looking for a romantic ranch-country aesthetic often choose this location for professional photo shoots.
For something different, you can even step inside and photograph the old hayloft.

7. Downtown Steamboat Springs
Downtown Steamboat is a great photo spot, thanks to its colorful storefronts, historic architecture, outdoor patios, public art, and distinctly Western vibe that's different from many Colorado resort towns.
The streets are especially photogenic after a fresh snowfall, when historic buildings, holiday lights, and snow-covered sidewalks look like a scene straight out of a Christmas movie.

8. Rabbit Ears Motel Neon Sign
This is probably Steamboat's most recognizable Instagram spot.
The giant pink rabbit and flashing neon sign have welcomed visitors for decades and are among the town's most photographed landmarks. The retro aesthetic is great for playful vacation photos. Visit around dusk, when the sign begins to glow.

9. 9th Street Bridge
The 9th Street Bridge is a versatile photo location in town because it gives you two great backdrops in one.
Face one direction, and you'll frame the Yampa River. Turn around, and you'll have views of the ski resort and surrounding mountains. The bridge makes a lovely backdrop for couples taking photos together.

10. Yampa River Botanic Park
Here's a hidden oasis in town: Yampa River Botanic Park.
Wandering through this beautiful off-the-beaten-path attraction, you'll find flower gardens, ponds, sculptures, bridges, and landscaped pathways. In other words, a myriad of incredible photo spots, all without any hiking involved. During spring and summer, the park is at its best, with blooms adding color and texture to your photos.
Photography Tips for Steamboat Springs
Use Golden Hour Whenever Possible
The hour before sunset provides the most flattering light for portraits. Skin tones look warmer, shadows soften, and mountain landscapes take on a beautiful glow.
Dress for the Season
Fall colors pair really well with earth tones, cream, rust, olive, and denim. During winter, avoid pure white outfits that blend into the snow. Rich colors such as navy, burgundy, forest green, and camel stand out nicely.
Capture Movement
Try some candid shots. Walk through the aspens, play with the kids beside the river, throw a snowball, or stroll through downtown. Just do your thing and have fun while someone captures you genuinely enjoying yourself wherever you are in Steamboat. Those candid moments often make for the most memorable photos and tend to perform well on social media too.
Consider a Professional Photographer
If you're celebrating an engagement, anniversary, family reunion, or milestone trip, a local photographer can help you take advantage of the best lighting, hidden locations, and seasonal conditions while ensuring everyone actually appears in the photos in the most professional way possible. Professional photos are truly the ultimate souvenir you can take home after spending time in a special place with special people.
